Chapter Ten
The organist was still playing the recessional on that second Sunday in June when Julia made her way over to the fifth row where Kyle stood chatting with Reverend Bob’s special friend, Mary Nelson. Everyone adored Mary, so Julia wasn’t surprised that Kyle had taken to her so easily.
“Have you tried again with Brett lately?” Mary was asking him when Julia approached.
“Not for a while.”
“The walls of Jericho didn’t fall the first time the Israelites marched around the city.”
“Are you comparing my brother to the people of Jericho? Wasn’t God against them in the war?”
Mary laughed out loud at that. “All right, smarty-pants. You know what I mean. You have to keep marching.”
“Thanks, Mary.” Kyle hugged the older woman as if they were old friends.
She turned her head, seeming to notice Julia’s presence for the first time. “Hello, Julia. I was just telling our Kyle here—”
Julia was still ruminating on the fact that Mary had called him “our Kyle,” when she realized that the woman had stopped talking. Mary stared two pews ahead to where Hannah was seated with her husband. Hannah’s head was resting on the back of the pew, and Todd was crouched over her.
“Is everything all right, Todd?” Mary called out just above a speaking voice.
The young father turned back to them, his eyes wide with panic. “Hannah’s…her water…I have to get her to…she needs…”
Hannah turned her head to the side so her profile showed. “What my husband is saying so eloquently is, my water broke. I’m afraid I’ve made a mess on the floor.”
Though she’d been kidding Todd for his nervousness, she looked up to him with an affectionate smile. Her expression transformed as her jaw tightened and her eyes closed in the throes of a contraction.
Todd shook his head as if to clear it. “Sorry. This is my first time at this.” He smoothed Hannah’s blond tresses back from her face and then brushed both hands through his own hair. “I guess I’m failing at the job.”
“You’re both doing fine.” Mary dropped her purse and Bible, and hurried over to the young couple. “You just need to stay with your wife and help her to relax. Now where’s your daughter?”
“Rebecca went out with Grandpa Bob to meet with members in the vestibule,” Todd said, never taking his eyes off his wife.
Mary turned back to Kyle and Julia and started giving orders like someone who was accustomed to being in charge. “Julia, would you please—No, Kyle, I need you to do this. Go find Charity and get her in here as soon as possible. It’s great having a labor and delivery nurse right here in the church.”
“She’s probably in the nursery collecting Grace,” Julia supplied.
“Have Rick go ahead and take Grace home with him,” Mary told Kyle.
Julia might have asked why Mary sent Kyle to find her sister rather than her, but the woman’s next request answered the question. She marveled at Mary’s calm handling of the situation when her own nerves were already frazzled.
“Julia, I need you to collect Rebecca from Bob and send her home with Brett and Tricia.
